Yangpu District, meaning "Willow Bank", is one of the 19 districts in Shanghai. Yangpu District is located in the northeast of Shanghai, bordering the Huangpu River on the east and south, Hongkou District on the west and Baoshan District in the north.
Yangpu District is an area where colleges and universities as well as scientific research institutes converge are located. The number of colleges and universities accounts for 1/3 of the total number of that all over Shanghai, among which are Fudan University and Tongji University, which enjoy similar reputation with Tsinghua University and Beijing University in Beijing.
The Wujiaochang ("Five Corner Place"which is the intersection of five major roads) is known to be the prime commercial area in Yangpu District. One landmark in Wujiaochang is the fantastically glitzy egg-shaped "Gate of Science and Technology"– a transparent and, at night, neon-lit structure which wraps around the Middle Ring Road (one of the main transportation routes in Shanghai). Wujiaochang integrates commercial, entertainment, cultural and residential developments in one place.
